Lonny T. Powell is not only a graduate of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program (RTIP), he also served as Director of the RTIP in the 1980s.  Lonny currently serves as the CEO of Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association (FTBOA), a not-for-profit association representing over 1,300 Florida breeders and owners.  Powell's ties to Arizona run deep as he served as the Director of the Arizona Department of Racing, where he was a member of Governor Jan Brewer's Cabinet, as well as an administrative law judge for the department.

Powell, a racing industry veteran, has held a number of high-profile positions within the industry, including as Santa Anita CEO, Racing Commissioners International President, and a senior vice president for an advanced deposit wagering (ADW) company.

Powell took part in the Joe Hirsch Speaker Series last week. “Lonny focused on his work with the FTBOA and the importance of staying actively involved with legislative efforts. He detailed the decoupling issues that the Florida racing and greyhound faced and the strategies employed to protect the Thoroughbred industry,” said Robert Hartman, RTIP Chair.  “Lonny has never wavered from his steadfast commitment to the RTIP and continues his support of RTIP students.”
